Summary

The first full analysis of the second Nagorno-Karabakh War--the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems。

The Second Nagorno-Karabakh war--fought between Armenia and Azerbaijan between September 24 and November 10, 2020--was the first war in history won primarily by unmanned systems。

This 44-day war resulted in a decisive military victory for Azerbaijan。 Armenia was outfought, outnumbered, and outspent and lost even though they controlled the high ground in a mountainous region that favored traditional defense。 Azerbaijan's alliance with Turkey, and close technological support from Israel, strategically isolated Armenia。 In addition, Turkey's posturing influenced the Russians not to intervene to support Armenia。 That Azerbaijan attacked Armenia during the pandemic was an additional factor。 The fact that Azerbaijan won the war is not extraordinary, considering the correlation of forces arrayed against Armenia。 What is exceptional is that this was the first modern war primarily decided by unmanned weapons。 In this war the Turkish-made BAYRAKTAR TB2 Unmanned Air Combat Vehicle (UCAV) and the Israeli-made HAROP Loitering Munition (LM) dominated the fighting and provided Azerbaijan with a war-winning advantage。

This is a timely think-piece on how Azerbaijan defeated Armenia in 44 days。 The 2nd Nagorno-Karabakh war is confirmation that technology, in the right innovative hands, can and did defeat conventional armored forces。 The author clearly explains the Azerbaijan embrace of modern technology and how it overwhelmed the Armenians who prepared their forces with conventional training and conventional equipment。 This book is well researched and is a great start to pondering and planning the future of war This is a timely think-piece on how Azerbaijan defeated Armenia in 44 days。 The 2nd Nagorno-Karabakh war is confirmation that technology, in the right innovative hands, can and did defeat conventional armored forces。 The author clearly explains the Azerbaijan embrace of modern technology and how it overwhelmed the Armenians who prepared their forces with conventional training and conventional equipment。 This book is well researched and is a great start to pondering and planning the future of warfare。 Tomorrow has arrived。 。。。more

Between September 24 and November 10 2020, while most of us were focused on Covid and Lockdowns, a pivotal war was fought in the Caucasus。 Azerbijan, and its puppetmaster Turkey were seeking to reverse their defeat in the 1988-1994 Nagorno Karabakh War- one in which they had been forced to cede the mountainous region to Armenia, who had created the "Artsakh Republic" with its capital in the provincial city Stepanakert。 The Azeris took back much of what they had lost in six years of war last Cent Between September 24 and November 10 2020, while most of us were focused on Covid and Lockdowns, a pivotal war was fought in the Caucasus。 Azerbijan, and its puppetmaster Turkey were seeking to reverse their defeat in the 1988-1994 Nagorno Karabakh War- one in which they had been forced to cede the mountainous region to Armenia, who had created the "Artsakh Republic" with its capital in the provincial city Stepanakert。 The Azeris took back much of what they had lost in six years of war last Century in a fast moving "Blitzkrieg" spearheaded not just by their "Spetznaz" Special forces, but especially through the use of Drones, and Loitering Reconnaissance flyers and Munitions。 Drones tripped Radars that got destroyed by missiles。 Loitering Drones found targets without human help and then fell on the target and exploded。 The Armenian forces, so well prepared for regular warfare, were overwhelmed and destroyed in detail by forces they could barely see let alone shoot at or destroy。 Colonel John Antal, a soldier, thinker, and writer on technological warfare takes us through the war in some detail and then explains its potential ramifications to both Military and Lay readers in a clear and concise 168 pages。 It's informative, intriguing- and not the most reassuring read。The Armenians, winners of the first war, got complacent。 With a much smaller economic base, and patron Russia standing behind them, they assumed that defensive works, their possession of key ridge lines and cities, and strong conventional weaponry (Tanks/Artillery/AA Systems) would be able to handle any and all comers。 Azerbijan had massive oil income, NATO's Turkey as a patron, access to Russian, Turkish and Israeli technologies and a burning desire to get the territory back。 Antal takes us through the technology they purchased, how they used it and the implications for other battlefields。 He takes the time to go over all the different ways human control, AI control and various mixtures of those can work- as well as new and potential future technologies can be or might be integrated into present systems and tactical needs。 I'm not the sharpest spoon in this particular knife drawer- but Antal really tries to cover it so the least technical can follow along。 Those following the present War in Ukraine (this review is written in April of '22) may find him ascribing far too much acumen to Russian systems and operators, but I think he may not have taken Russian Military Industrial Corruption into account。 The book is nevertheless very interesting and a bit scary at the same time。There are a few adult themes and a lot of technological passages, so this is best read by the Junior Reader over 15/16 with some understanding of computing and AI。 For the Gamer/Modeler/Military Enthusiast- its sort of a whole New World。 Not sure how the Gamer could involve these systems in their Post Cold War Gaming- but if they wanted to- this would be a good place to start。 There are enough photos and line drawings of systems and their vehicular hosts to add some to say, a Team Yankee/Battlegroup Modern/Red Storm Rising/CoC Modern army or to a Skirmish game, and almost enough information to try to develop rules and percentage effectiveness tables。 Antal writes as if all systems are infallible, but the gamer/soldier should realize that there must have been quite a few failures and glitches in a real world war application of such cutting edge tech。 Modelers can use his information to try to model some of these weapons and masking technologies。 The Military Enthusiast gets a window into the future possibilities on battlefields and good information on how future concepts might go beyond the now。 Overall, it's an engaging book full of interesting recent history, technological insights and frightening future visions of battlefields to come。 。。。more
